Methodology
The Industry Commons is a methodology that pools intellectual property contributed by industries from across a wide range of verticals into a toolkit of user interfaces, enabling technologies and datasets. Creative innovators then combine and build upon this set of tools and raw materials in order to create new and otherwise unimaginable products, processes, business models and research.
Not to be confused with “Industrial Commons” (a reference to industry supply clusters, sector knowledge and traditional know-how), the Industry Commons is a platform for the creation of new market opportunities in a way that breaks silos between sectors, provides rapid knowledge transfer between industry and entrepreneurial innovators, and safely bolts on disruptive innovation on top of existing industry capabilities.
It is centred on the notion of an innovation ecosystem: a positive sum game environment that brings together elements of open innovation with participants both from within and outside of traditional industry contexts in order to create new collaborative projects that realise the potential of disruptive innovation in a managed and accountable way that is beneficial to all stakeholders.
By contributing industry IP into a shared toolkit, putting that toolkit into the hands of brilliant innovators, incentivising them to create new ideas and then supporting those ideas to market with a clear, accountable framework, the Industry Commons provides a virtuous circle of enterprise and industry that not only gives outsiders unprecedented access to groundbreaking industry technologies, it also embeds industry technologies within radical new products, processes and business models that create markets in the untapped spaces between traditional industry silos.
